Teaching My GF Sports #2: Hate sees no age

February 7, 2017

Hello bromigos & girlitos…

This column (and entire blog to an extent) is a failing attempt to teach my girlfriend sports, and today’s lesson might make me seem like a “hater.” However, my girlfriend just doesn’t understand, when it comes to sports, hate sees no age or innocence — only team.

She might have already labeled me as a “hater” early in the relationship, while I was insulting a jogger from behind tinted-windows in my car (a victimless crime at worse). But honestly… This woman had on a flashing caution light for joggers during the sunny daytime.

Who are you? And why do you insist on jogging in place at the stop lights? Is that really going to be the difference maker in your heart rate?

You look kind of stupid! But I digress…. I’m a saint and my girlfriend doesn’t understand what it’s like to always be a fan for the underdog (a.k.a. a ‘true’ American).

Or, I’m a damn hater… You be the judge.

In my opinion, it’s un-American to NOT cheer or at least secretly root for the underdog.

That’s why I feel like I speak for most Americans when I say — I’m sick of watching Tom Brady and New England at the Superbowl (especially winning it).

Yet again, everyone (outside of New England) has to gag on another sour NFL season until next year’s debacle. Sure, we’ll have hope — but it’s useless. Some other team might win it next year, but that just means Tom Brady is EVEN MORE likely to win the following year. Look at the pattern.

But this article isn’t about hating on Tom Brady… That’s impossible — he’s married to Gisele Bündchen. Instead, I am compelled to hate on this 15 year-old Boston fan I read about on BleacherReport.com.

Tom Brady and the Patriots have won 5 recent titles, and the Celtics and Bruins each won titles in 2008 and 2011 (respectively). Plus, the Red Soxs celebrated parades in 2004, 2007 and 2013.

10 Boston Championships since 2002 – What?!?!

This boy is spoiled rotten. He just doesn’t get it… Championships don’t grow on trees.

How can I relate this to my girlfriend?

Championships aren’t as frequent as dress shows on televisions, and this kid hasn’t seen defeat (not real defeat) — not like Cincinnati Reds and Bengals’ fans — not like Atlanta Falcons and Braves’ fans. He hasn’t EARNED all the joy he’s living as a sports fan now. Sports are about pain too.

Not to mention this NFL season ranged from rough to unwatchable at times. All of America suffered this NFL Season (except New England).

Sure… Did I win my fantasy football season again?

Yes!

Did my girlfriend accuse me of showing the fantasy football trophy too much affection?

Of Course! Which one comes with a cash prize? Not my girlfriend…

Nevermind, my point is some good things have remained the same…

I know what my girlfriend is saying… “Stop hating on a little kid! Why don’t you just act your age and be happy for other people?”

Remember though, the kid started it.

He was born at the perfect time in Boston sports history, and I’m envious of him for his blessings. Him an his friends Tom Brady too… That doesn’t make me a “hater,” does it?
